    HOW TO COOK WHEN CAMPING

Preparing food when on a camping trip can be one of the most fun activities to do regardless of whether you will be staying in a tent, cabin, or RV. But if you have never been on a camping trip, you may not be too comfortable cooking over a fire, camp stove, or cooking in a small kitchen in an RV. But if you have a small grill or barbeque that would make you feel better when cooking on a camping trip, then bring it. You do not have to cook on an open flame if you do not want to.

When preparing for a camping trip, you should bring the following food ingredients:

    Meats

    Fish

    Vegetables

    Fruits that have strong skins

    Potatoes

    Bread

    Liquid eggs

    Powered milk

    Cereal

    Luncheon meat

    Trail mix

    Water

    Salt

    Pepper

    Coffee, Tea

You can basically cook whatever you like when camping, but you should think about foods that you can do without which include:

    Eggs

    Dairy products (cheese, ice cream)

Fresh fruits that will ripen and spoil quickly (bananas, ect.)

These foods will not last when traveling unless you will be staying in an RV. Try to find foods that will not spoil easily. While you can bring a cooler, you will have to choose carefully how many perishable foods to pack inside the cooler. Remember that you will have to leave room for ice, which should be changed every few days.

Store meat, certain fruits and vegetables, and liquid eggs in the cooler when traveling to the campsite.

You will also be able to store leftover food in the cooler so that it can be eaten the next day.

    BREAKFAST

When planning breakfast, you should prepare a larger meal that everyone will want to eat. This meal will give people energy for activities they will want to do during the day. A typical campground breakfast usually includes some or all of the following:

    Eggs

    Toast

    Sausage or bacon

    Coffee, tea, milk, or water

    Oatmeal

    Cold cereal

This is an easy breakfast that you can prepare using an iron skillet, grill, and kitchen stove.

    Iron Skillet

You can use an iron skillet over a fire if you have a grate that can be placed over the flame. Iron skillets are not expensive and can be used for many years. Cook food in the skillet as you would in any other cooking pan.

The great thing about iron skillets is that you will not have to grease it down in order to keep food from sticking. Since you must coat the skillet when you first buy it, the iron will absorb the grease. Whenever you cook on the skillet, grease from meats and other foods will be absorbed into the iron. All you will have to do is wipe the excess grease from the pan. Do not use dish washing detergent on an iron skillet.

If you need more room to cook when using an open flame, you can use smaller iron skillets, or cook them in aluminum foil. This will reduce the amount of space you will need.

    Grill

If you will be using a small grill, you will be able to cook food using foil. This may take a little longer, but the taste of the food will be amazing. Grilled food is healthy, and easy to keep warm. You will have to buy charcoal and lighter fluid in order to create heat.

Grills come in a few sizes and you should find one that will be large enough for the group of campers you will be feeding. Small gas grills are available if you do not want to use a charcoal grill.

Some campsites have grills available for use, but they are usually not close enough to the sites, especially for the first meal of the day. You should bring your own grill when you want to use one.

    Small kitchen in RV

If you will be renting an RV, you will be able to cook meals using a small kitchen that is provided. These kitchens include:

    Stove

    Oven

    Refrigerator

    Freezer

    Microwave

    Pantry

Having many of the conveniences of home will allow you to prepare meals you would normally prepare. You will have to pay attention to the amount of energy you use and how many dishes you will have to wash. RV’s provide electricity through small generators. You will be able to cook enough food for your family, but you should limit your cooking time.

    LUNCH

If you will be returning to the campsite for lunch, you should prepare foods in advance if possible so that you will be able to eat and enjoy the rest of the day. Foods that could be served for lunch include:

    Luncheon meats

    Sandwiches

    Salads

    Fruits

    Hamburgers

    Hotdogs

You should prepare salads before one day before traveling so that they will be ready to serve. Salads such as potato, macaroni, and hearty fruit salads are the best because they will not spoil as quickly. They should be stored in the cooler and thrown away three days after preparing them.

    Iron Skillet

Cooking hamburgers and hotdogs on an iron skillet is very easy. You will be able to cook vegetables is you want as well that will compliment the meal.

    Grill

You will be able to grill hotdogs and hamburgers quickly using a small grill. This is a great way to spend an afternoon with family and friends. Serving some salad on the side will complete this traditional campground meal.

    Small Kitchen in RV

Unless you have a grill, you should not prepare hamburgers and hotdogs. You should serve sandwiches, salads, and snack foods that can be opened easily and placed into bowls. Everyone likes sandwiches, so by serving a few types of luncheon meat will allow people to create their own meal.

    DINNER

After a long day of activities, sight seeing, and spending time with other people, you will be tired. Cooking dinner will vary on what you and your family prefers and what you feel like cooking. The possibilities are endless, but some common dinners to prepare when camping include:

    Hamburgers

    Hotdogs

    Spare ribs

    Chicken

    Macaroni and cheese

    Grilled vegetables

    Fruit

    Salads

Desserts can also be cooked while camping. Popular campground desserts include:

    Cobbler

    Corn bread

    Pie

    S’mores

    Marshmallows

    Iron Skillet

Cooking dinner on an iron skillet may be a challenge only because of the amount of food you will have to make. Keeping food warm will be the most challenging when using a skillet. Aluminum foil can be used to wrap up meat to keep it warm while cooking other meats. You will be able to grill vegetables on the grate instead of using the skillet. Be creative and try to find way to keep food warm.

    Grill

Depending on the size of your grill, you should be able to cook all the food at the same time. Serve right from the grill so that everyone will be able to enjoy a hot meal. You will be able to cook desserts as well on the grill. Cleaning the grill will be the biggest challenge when using it. Bring your cleaning supplies and cleanser on your camping trip.

    Small kitchen in RV

Cooking dinner in an RV kitchen is easy, but you will have to remember to conserve energy and not make too much of a mess with plates and utensils. RV’s will give you the best chance of cooking food that tastes like it would if you were home.

    SNACK FOODS

In between meals, people enjoy snacking. But when camping, you will be engaged in different activities. You should provide a few snacks that will get people through their day or when hanging out by the fire at night. Common snacks include:

    Trail mix

    Cheese snacks

    Potato chips

    Beef jerky

    Candy

    Popcorn

    Marshmallows

    Granola

Provide snacks that will give people energy, but are also fun to eat. These snacks can also be stored in your chuck box or you can put them in small sandwich bags that people will be able to take with them when they are hiking, or rock climbing.

Snacks can also be made from leftover food from the night before. You should be creative with the food you bring with you so that you will be able to have enough for the entire trip.

    COOKING EQUIPMENT

Now that you have an idea of the types of food you will be able to prepare while camping, the following is a list of items you will need to cook the food:

Skillet that can withstand high temperatures (iron skillets work the best)

    Large pot

    Pans

    Cooking utensils (spatulas, spoons, forks)

    Aluminum foil

    Tea kettle

    Mugs

    Cups

    Plates

    Eating utensils

    Dish washing detergent

    Towels

    Paper towels

    Grilling utensils

    Plastic storage containers for leftovers

Cooking equipment can be packed in a small box that will not take up too much room.

Make sure that all equipment is cleaned and stored safely each night so that it can be used the next day.

COOKING EQUIPMENT TO BRING WHEN TRAVELING IN AN RV

Preparing food in an RV requires you to think small so that you will be able to cook food without using all of the energy. Tips on how to prepare food in an RV include:

In an effort to conserve water and electricity, you should try to use paper and plastic products as often as possible. This will reduce the amount of plates and utensils you will have to wash, which will save water.

Store leftovers in the refrigerator so that they can be used when traveling.

Try to cook foods in advance before traveling so that you will not have to use the kitchen too often, except to reheat foods or cook breakfast.

Bring bottled water, milk, and juices and store them in the refrigerator.

Use smaller pots and pans when cooking; they are smaller and you will not need to use as much water as usual to wash them.

In many ways, an RV is more convenient than camping with a grill or an open flame. You will be able to prepare foods while the RV is in motion, you will be to cook safely when it is raining, and you will be able to store more food because of the refrigerator and extra storage space you will have.

FOODS TO FEED KIDS WHEN CAMPING

The foods that you feed kids when camping do not have to be that different from what you feed them at home. Foods that are healthy and fun to eat include:

    Yogurt

    Cereal

    Trail mix

    String cheese

    Cheese and crackers

    Sandwiches

    Hamburgers

    Hotdogs

    Chicken fingers

    Chocolate milk

    Marshmallows

You will be able to feed healthy foods to your kids without spoiling their fun while they are on vacation. While some of these snacks will have to be stored in the cooler, you will also be able to buy snack packs, dried fruit, and other foods that do not need to be stored in a refrigerated area. Give out snacks twice a day so that your kids will have enough energy to last them when they are participating in activities.
